Three Doctors Agree: Schizophrenia Lead to Death of Mother
Court Allows Carol Adams to Seek Treatment for Mental Illness

ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that CAROL ADAMS, 47, of Albany, NY, pled Not Guilty by Reason of  Mental Disease or Defect for her role in the death of her mother on January 16, 2008.

The plea today comes after three doctors unanimously diagnosed ADAMS with schizophrenia, and attributed the actions leading up to her mothers death to the disease.

“This tragic death could have easily been avoided with just one phone call, and sadly the mental state of Ms. Adams prevented her from making that call for help. After careful consideration of statements and doctors reports, we agreed to allow Ms. Adams to plead not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect in the interest of justice. We sincerely hope that through the evaluation process that must now take place, she is able to get the help and treatment she has needed for a very long time,” commented DA Soares.

In April, ADAMS was indicted by the Grand Jury on a sealed indictment consisting of three counts: (1) count of Manslaughter in the Second Degree, a Class “C” Felony, (1) count of Criminally Negligent Homicide, a Class “E” Felony and (1) count of Endangering the Welfare of a Vulnerable Elderly Person in the First Degree, a Class “D” Felony.

The indictment alleged that for several weeks ending on approximately January 16, 2008, at 18 Crestwood Court in the City of Albany, ADAMS recklessly caused the death of her mother. ADAMS agreed to provide care to her mother and then failed to adequately do so, resulting in profound malnutrition.

Homicide and Special Victims Bureau Chief Dave Rossi handled the prosecution of this case.
