Office of the District Attorney P. David Soares Identity Theft Sends Woman to Prison for 7 Years ALBANY, NY – Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that NATARA ALEXANDER, 30, of ALBANY, NY, was sentenced to 3 ½ - 7 years in prison by the Honorable Stephen Herrick. In August 2008, ALEXANDER pled guilty to (1) count of Identity Theft in the Second Degree, a Class “E” Felony and (1) count of Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, a Class “E” Felony. In August 2007, ALEXANDER, using a stolen identity, opened up an account at Capital Communication Federal Credit Union by depositing a forged check for $4,637.00. ALEXANDER withdrew $2595.00 of that money before Capital Communications received notice that the deposited check was dishonored because the checking account it was drawn from was a closed account. Capital Communications contacted the account holder, who was unaware of the account opened in her name. The Colonie Police Department identified ALEXANDER through their investigation of the matter. Additionally, ALEXANDER used the same victim’s identity to re-open a Trustco checking account that the victim closed in 2006. ALEXANDER obtained new checks issued on the account and used them to buy $6,000 worth of merchandise at Taft’s Furniture when she knew there were insufficient funds in the account to cover the cost of the purchase and that she was not the person whose name appeared on the check. “The damage done by identity theft is devastating and long lasting. Victims can spend years repairing damaged credit ratings and reputations and I am glad this woman is being held accountable for the harm she has caused to her victim and the businesses affected by her actions,” commented DA Soares. ### All charged individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
