Office of the District Attorney P. David Soares Stephen J. Maier Sentenced to 2-6 for DWI ALBANY , NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that STEPHEN J. MAIER, 47, of 500 Northern Boulevard , Albany , NY was sentenced today to 2-6 years in State prison by the Honorable Stephen W. Herrick. MAIER had pled guilty to a D Felony for Driving While Intoxicated and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Vehicle in the 1 st Degree on July, 25, 2005 . MAIER was arrested on May 26 th, 2005 . He was operating a vehicle on Ontario Street in the City of Cohoes when he veered over the center line and cut off a police cruiser. After the traffic stop, MAIER failed all three field sobriety tests and was subsequently found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.22% well over the legal limit of 0.08%. At the time of his arrest, MAIER’s driver’s license had been suspended and he was in the second year of a five year period of parole for a previous alcohol related felony offense. DA Soares noted that this was MAIER’s 6 th alcohol related arrest. “This defendant is a danger to society. He has been given chance after chance and yet he continues to re-offend. Hopefully a substantial term in State prison can help him turn his life around and while offering some measure of protection for the public.” he said. “Drunk drivers in Albany County need to recognize that this office will no longer be tolerating repeat offenders. We are now increasingly seeking substantial jail terms commensurate with the dangers that these defendants pose to society”, Soares added.
