Albany Man Sentenced to Maximum for Beating Puppy

ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that LASHAWN CARTER, 30, of Albany, NY, was sentenced to one-year in jail by the Honorable Rachel L Kretser. In August, CARTER was found guilty after a jury trial of (1) count of Animal Cruelty, an Unclassified Misdemeanor.

On June 20, 2007, at 11:02 PM in the City of Albany, LASHAWN CARTER cruelly beat (with unjustifiable means) his six-month-old puppy with his closed fist at least ten times.

“This man improperly took his anger out on a defenseless animal and it is my hope the guilty verdict in August and the maximum sentence imposed today sends a message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated, and will be aggressively prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Assistant District Attorney George P. Ferro handled the prosecution of this case.
