Drug Dealer Caught Shipping Cocaine Through UPS

ALBANY , NY – Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that PATRICK LEIGH, 31, of Albany, NY, pled guilty to (1) count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree, a Class “D” Felony, in front of the Honorable Thomas Breslin. LEIGH faces a cap of 9 years in prison and 5 years post release supervision when sentenced on July 17, 2008.

“Dealing drugs is illegal on the street, over the Internet and through the mail. The UPS has the authority to open any suspicious package and criminals should not be surprised to find police at their door if they choose to engage in similar behavior,” commented DA Soares.

On October 10, 2007, UPS workers called the Albany Police about what they believed to be a suspicious package that may contain cocaine. Albany Police Officers responded, conducted a field test and found it positive for cocaine. The package contained approximately 2 kilos. The police wrapped the package back up and delivered one kilo to LEIGH, with an undercover Officer posing as the UPS delivery person. LEIGH signed for the package, and shortly thereafter Albany Police executed a search warrant for the address where the package was delivered and recovered the cocaine along with approximately 5 pounds of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. There were no others present in the apartment and mail for LEIGH along with his clothes and belongings were found in the apartment as well.

Street Crimes Bureau Chief Francisco Calderon is handling the prosecution of this case.
