ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced (2) indictments today from the Special Victim’s Unit within the Office of the District Attorney.

1) ELNOR THOMAS, 33, of 441 Elk Street, Albany, NY on (2) counts including Assault in the Second Degree, a class “D” Felony and endangering the welfare of a child.

The THOMAS Indictment alleges that between the approximate dates of March 18 and April 16, 2006, THOMAS did, with intent, cause physical injury to the victim who was less than 7 years old. The child’s injuries included a fracture to the arm, retinal hemorrhaging, bruises, abrasions, and lacerations to the neck, head, and back. The child was left unfed and malnourished causing her to eat her own hair and to be in the 63% of the height and weight for the child’s age.

2) MOHAMED AHMED, 46, of 146 South Pearl, Albany, NY on (7) counts including 2 counts of Assault in the First Degree, Class “B” Felonies, 3 counts of Assault in the Second Degree, Class “D” Felonies, and 2 Counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

The AHMED Indictment alleges that between December 2005 and April 26, 2006, AHMED would intentionally strike, strangle, kick, and whip two children less than 11 years old. The indictment alleges that AHMED would repeatly use an electrical cord and the injuries include evidence of long-term abuse which included lacerations and permanent scarring in several areas of both victims.

Soares stated, “It is clear from today’s two indictments, that there are children in the County of Albany are being terrorized, battered, neglected, and left unfed by adults with whom they should trust the most in their world. We will continue to prosecute individuals like THOMAS and AHMED and hold them accountable to these horrific acts.”

Soares pointed out the crucial role of law enforcement in collecting evidence as a key to bringing defendants to justice. "We have to invest in prevention to protect these children, and give them the opportunity to grow up healthy-- it is time to act and re-establish the Child Advocacy Center.”

If convicted on all counts, THOMAS faces 7 years in prison. AHMED faces 32 years.

The Special Victim’s Unit was part of the reorganization within the Albany County District Attorney’s Office. Since, January of 2005, the unit has doubled in staff size.
