Guilty Verdict in Trial of Six Year Old Murder Case ALBANY , NY – District Attorney P. David Soares announced that LAMAR REID, 26, of Albany, NY was found guilty by jury this afternoon after a trial presided over by the Honorable Thomas Breslin. REID was found guilty of Murder in the Second Degree and faces 25 years to life in prison. DA Soares thanked the jury for their service and the family of Shawndell Smith for their commitment to assisting this office and reducing crime. “On behalf of the family of Shawndell Smith, I am very pleased with the outcome of this trial. This case could not have been successfully prosecuted without the diligent pursuit of justice by the family of the victim, and the extraordinary commitment of Detectives Ryan and Bennett from the Albany Police Department and Assistant District Attorney Dave Rossi.” On June 8 th, 2001, LAMAR REID and SHAHKENE JOSEPH, 23, knowingly shot and killed Shawndell Smith, 21, at 298 Second Street. The two defendants, who were both armed, repeatedly shot Smith with a 20 gauge shotgun and a 7.62 caliber semi automatic rifle through a wooden door when they knew Smith was behind the door. Smith was hit in the neck with a bullet from the automatic rifle and was hit in the shoulder and arm with shot from the shotgun. Shawndell Smith subsequently died from the injuries caused by the REID and JOSEPH. REID will be sentenced on May 25, 2007. JOSEPH will be tried for the murder of Shawndell Smith in front of the Honorable Thomas Breslin. ADA Dave Rossi from the Homicide Unit handled the prosecution of this case.
