Albany Robbery Suspect Found Guilty, Faces 50 Years in State Prison

 ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced the verdict in the trial of FIDELIS ONYIA, 19, of 1400 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY. ONYIA was found guilty on (1) count of Robbery in the 1 st Degree, (1) count of Burglary in the 1 st Degree, (1) count of Robbery in the 2 nd Degree and (1) count of Criminal Use of a Firearm in the 1 st Degree after a trial before the Honorable Dan Lamont.

FIDELIS ONYIA, along with SHAVAR FOOTMAN, 21, of 276 Ontario Street, Albany, NY, forced their way into a home at 547 Hamilton Street on April 6 th, 2006. The defendants stole a large amount of cash from the victim at gunpoint before the victim was able to escape from the home and alert police who were on routine patrol in the area. A standoff occurred between the police officers and the defendants who eventually fled the home on foot. ONYIA was apprehended at the corner of Hudson Avenue and Ontario Street.

Sentencing for FIDELIS ONYIA is scheduled for May 18, 2007. ONYIA faces 50 years in State Prison.

DA Soares praised the diligent work of his staff on securing the guilty verdict and the Albany Police Department for making their good arrest. “This guilty verdict and the sentencing of the Pine Hills Burglar earlier this week should send a very clear message to those considering burglary as a career, that this crime will not be tolerated in Albany County.”
