Fowler to Run Street Crimes Bureau

ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that Cheryl K. Fowler would run the newly formed Street Crimes Bureau.

Fowler, a twelve year veteran of the Albany County DA’s office, has had a distinguished career having been named Arson Prosecutor of the Year by the NYS Fire Investigation Association in 1999 and having won the 1997 Daniel S. Dwyer Memorial Award issued by Albany County Stop DWI. In addition to prosecuting DWI and arson cases, Fowler has participated in virtually every kind of criminal prosecution in the office including Police Court, Town Courts, burglaries and homicides.

District Attorney Soares said, “Cheryl Fowler is the kind of tough and smart prosecutor that I want to pull together the prosecution of guns, gangs, and drugs. These are all related crimes and it only makes sense to pull their prosecution into a single bureau.” Fowler will run one of the Office’s largest bureaus including, in addition to herself, four Assistant District Attorneys, a full time investigator, and a secretary. Budget plans call for an additional prosecutor to be assigned to the bureau in the near future. “The size of this bureau reflects my choice to concentrate our resources on developing and implementing a comprehensive attack on street crime,” Soares added.

Soares also noted that Fowler will be the first woman to run a major bureau within the office.

Fowler received her Juris Doctor from Albany Law School in 1992 and graduated magna cum laude with her Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice in 1989 SUNY Albany. Prior to joining the Albany County District Attorney’s Office, she served as a Law Clerk for Chief Assistant District Attorney Daniel S. Dwyer from January 1991 to January 1993. She also served as a Legislative Intern for Congressman George Wortley during the summer of 1988.
