Three Long Sentences for Street Crime

ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced the acceptance of a guilty pleas resulting in extensive prison sentences for three violent street criminals. Joshua Haywood, 21, of 15 Wilson Street, Rensselaer, NY is facing 8 years with 5 years of post release supervision for breaking into a house in Colonie twice over the course of two weeks. Corey Demand, 33, of 363 Congress Street, Troy, NY faces the prospect of incarceration until 2031. He robbed the Price Chopper in Menands, violently pushing the cashier to the floor and elbowing the store manager in the face. Since DEMAND committed this crime while he was out on parole for previous convictions, he faces the prospect of returning to prison until the completion of his parole term in 2021 along with the prospect of ten years tacked onto the end of that sentence. Finally, Russell Oxendine, 31, of Scottish Inn, Central Avenue, Albany, NY faces 12 years along with five years of post release supervision for a violent purse snatching that took place on Lark Street last August 18 which also resulted in a concussion being suffered by the victim. Concerned and alert citizens chased Oxendine until he was finally captured by Officers of the Canine Unit of the Albany Police Department.

Soares praised the work of ADA Joseph Muia, Jr. who obtained these convictions which will result in violent felons being removed from our streets for a potential total of 47 years. “When we prosecute persistent and repeat offenders, we are determined to lock them up for a very significant period. The average sentence for these cases is ten years plus the revocation of freedom for violating probation” he said.

HAYWOOD will be sentenced before the Honorable Thomas A. Breslin on May 4,2005 .

DEMAND will be sentenced before the Honorable Stephen W. Herrick on May 10, 2005.

OXENDINE will be sentenced before Judge Herrick on May 9, 2005.
