Antonia Novello Pleads Guilty to Defrauding New York State

ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that ANTONIA NOVELLO, 64, of FL, pled guilty this morning to (1) count of Offering a False Instrument For Filing in the First Degree, a Class “E” Felony before the Honorable Stephen Herrick.

Between January 31, 2004 and December 25, 2006 NOVELLO defrauded New York State by using her state driver for personal use and not claiming the dollar amount of the benefit as required by all state employees.

In accordance with the plea agreement, NOVELLO must serve 250 hours of community service at Koinonia Primary Care, a healthcare clinic in Albany, N.Y., and pay $22,500 in restitution and a $5,000 fine when sentenced August 14, 2009.

“I would like to thank the Inspector General, the Honorable Joseph Fisch, for his diligent investigation and commitment to holding our public official accountable. In misappropriating state resources, Dr. Novello abdicated her responsibilities to the taxpayers of our state and placed her personal preferences above that of the public. In requiring her to tend to the uninsured, we hope to remediate a selfish act with selfless service, while reminding each of us that our measure as a society is determined by how we care for those most in need,” said Albany County District Attorney David Soares.

Assistant District Attorney Linda Griggs of the Public Integrity Unit handled the prosecution of this case.
