DA Soares Announces Preliminary Results of Checkpoints Last Night

ALBANY , NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced the preliminary results of the 16-agency enforcement action that took place last night throughout Albany County.

“I would like to thank our partners in law enforcement for the professionalism and cooperation displayed during the checkpoints last evening. Your dedication to public safety should be commended and I sincerely appreciate your willingness, despite inclement weather, to ensure that the streets of Albany County are the safest streets in New York State,” commented DA Soares.

Beginning at 8:00 PM last evening and ending at 1:00 AM, over 100 members of the 16-agency task force set up seven checkpoints at the following locations:

  • Route 32 crossing into the Village of Menands
  • Route 20 in Guilderland
  • Route 9W in Coeymans
  • Route 9 in Colonie
  • The 112st Bridge in Cohoes
  • The Green Island Bridge
  • 23 rd Street Bridge in Watervliet

There were also roving checkpoints throughout the county. Preliminary results indicate that there were approximately 24 arrests for alcohol and drug related offenses and dozens of other violations issued during the 5 hour period.

All charged individuals enjoy the presumption of innocence and it is the burden of the people to prove them guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The task force included members of the following agencies:

  • Office of the Albany County District Attorney
  • Albany County Sherriff’s Department
  • New York State Police
  • New York State Department of Motor Vehicles
  • New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
  • Albany Police Department
  • Altamont Police Department
  • Bethlehem Police Department
  • Cohoes Police Department
  • Colonie Police Department
  • Coeymans Police Department
  • Green Island Police Department
  • Guilderland Police Department
  • Menands Police Department
  • Watervliet Police Department
  • University at Albany Police Department

Two similar enforcement actions occurred in June and August of last year resulting in 459 infractions. The June 26, 2008 checkpoints yielded 195 infractions including:

  • 17 Driving While Intoxicated Arrests;
  • 1 Uninsured Vehicle Citation;
  • 1 Open Container Violation;
  • 7 Unlawful Possession of Marijuana Arrests;
  • 1 Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7 th Degree Arrest;
  • 9 Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle Arrests;
  • 51 Uninspected Vehicle Citations; and
  • 109 Various Uniform Traffic Tickets.

The August 19, 2008 checkpoints conducted yielded 264 infractions including:

  • 31 Driving While Intoxicated Arrests;
  • 1 Driving While Ability Impaired Arrest;
  • 1 Driving While Ability Impaired with Drug Use Arrest;
  • 1 Uninsured Vehicle Citation;
  • 3 Open Container Violations;
  • 10 Unlawful Possession of Marijuana Arrests;
  • 1 Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7 th Degree Arrest;
  • 10 Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle Arrests;
  • 20 Uninspected Vehicle Citations; and
  • 187 Various Uniform Traffic Tickets.

Information obtained from those arrested for DWI and DWAI will be compiled and shared with the public as soon as it becomes available.
