Trial of Couple Found Guilty on Top Count

ALBANY , NY – Albany County District Attorney David Soares announced the guilty verdicts of ERIC STROUD 34 and OLYMPIA STROUD, 33 of 505 Yates Street, Albany. Both Defendants were found guilty of Attempted Robbery in the 3rd Degree.

On January 5, 2006, at the Wal-Mart Store on Troy-Schenectady Road in Colonies (Latham), ERIC STROUD was observed by store security, opening the boxes of at least four DVDs in the store and then putting the actual discs into his coat pocket while his wife and co-defendant, OLYMPIA STROUD attempted to shield this activity from observation. After paying for several other items, this defendant and his wife were stopped by the store’s loss prevention officer between the exit doors of the store and told to give back the stolen items. This defendant began to swear and deny he had taken anything and pushed his way to the outside of the store with the cart. When the loss prevention officer persisted, this defendant pushed and shoved him and eventually punched the loss prevention officer in the mouth. In the meantime, this defendant’s wife was screaming and swearing and jumped on the loss prevention officer’s back scratching his neck and tearing his shirt off. The loss prevention officer persisted in keeping these defendants on the property until police arrived.

District Attorney Soares stated today, “This is a case of 2 unemployed shoplifters, who became desperate, and then turned violent.  Security Officers, who were assaulted, for simply doing their jobs.  Both Strouds will now have significant time to think of the consequences of their actions.”

As predicate felons, they each face a minimum of 2-4 years and/or a maximum of 31/2 to 7 years in prison. Sentencing will be in front of the Honorable Judge Thomas Breslin. Date unavailable at time of release.
