Rennselear County DA Patricia DeAngelis, Judge Thomas Breslin, Judge William Carter, Judge Anthony John Dorfman, Steve Coffey, Anthony Cardona, Paul DerOhannesian, and Cheryl Coleman Sol Greenberg was born November 6, 1921 to Romanian Immigrants Jacob and Helen Greenberg. The oldest of three, he was raised in the Mansion Hill and Myrtle Ave area of Albany, New York. Sol attended public school, later named Phillip Schuyler, Hackett Middle School, and graduated from Albany High School in 1939. In 1943, Sol graduated from the New York State Teacher’s College, now the State University of New York at Albany, and entered the United States Naval School at Columbia University. After graduating Sol received his commission as an ensign for the United States Navy in November, 1943. Like many men of this time, he proclaimed himself to be a “Ninety Day Wonder” after completing his naval training in only ninety days. After being Honorably Discharged in January of 1946, Sol continued to serve in the US Navy Reserves and retired after 28 years with the rank of Commander. Upon being discharged Sol enrolled in the Albany Law School and after six straight semesters, graduated in 1948. He began his law career and worked for the law firms of; O’Connell and Aronowitz, the Troy firm of Murphy, Aldrich, Guy, Broderick, & Simmon, as well as the law firm of Ungerman, Greenberg & Harris, who later went on to become a Supreme Court Justice. Much of Sol’s practice specialized in trusts and estates, corporate law, administrative law, as well as periodic appearances in local criminal matters. In 1974 Sol was invited to the home of Albany County Democratic Chairman Dan O’Connell and was offered the party’s candidacy for the office of Albany County District Attorney, to which Sol accepted. The story was broken by a young Times Union reporter, Carol Demare. Upon hearing the news about Mr. Greenberg, incumbent District Attorney Ralph Smith was heard to remark “Sol who?”. When asked whether or not Sol had met with Dan O’Connell, Sol replied “Oh, sure! I sat in the same seat that John F. Kennedy sat in.” District Attorney Smith was heavily favored to win as he was appointed by Governor Nelson Rockefeller to take over for Arnold Proskin. Proskin had stepped down to take the seat of Albany County Court Judge. Sol won the election by a margin by only 492 votes. Smith later went on to become a United States Magistrate. Sol was sworn into the Albany County District Attorney’s Office January 1, 1975. He would later go on to run for reelection seven times, four of which were unopposed. Sol Greenberg was the longest tenured Albany County District Attorney, serving from 1975-2000. Sol presently works as a consultant for New York State Forensic Investigation Support Services Unit, examining “cold cases”.
