Raymon McGill Indicted

ALBANY, NY –  District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that RAYMON MCGILL , 23, a resident of the Altoona Correctional Facility was indicted today on 14 counts in two separate cases. In the case of the murder of Martha Montalvo, McGILL indicted on 7 counts including two counts of Murder in the 1 st Degree and three counts of Murder in the 2 nd Degree, one count of Attempted Sexual Abuse in the 1 st Degree, and one count of Robbery in the 1 st. In the case of the murder of George Young, McGILL was indicted on one count of Murder in the 1 st Degree, two counts of Murder in the 2 nd Degree and one count of Robbery in the 1 st Degree. In the case of the rape of the elderly woman, McGILL was indicted for Rape in the 1 st and two counts of Burglary in the 2 nd Degree.

The indictments allege that MCGILL brutally murdered of George Young, 68, on or about January 26, 2004 and Martha Montalvo, 50, on or about March 6, 2000 and raped a 78 year old woman on or about January 21, 2000. The victim was suffering from dementia at the time of the rape. All three of these crimes were especially violent: Young was beaten with a piece of steel reinforcing bar and then shot in the head and Montalvo was killed by multiple stab wounds.

MCGILL was charged with the crimes after an analysis of his DNA matched up with DNA samples taken at the scenes of all three crimes. MCGILL is currently serving time for attempted robbery.

DA Soares express his desire that this Indictment would signal a turning point in law enforcement in New York State. “In this case, a DNA match solved three open cases. However, had we had a DNA match at the time of his McGill’s first conviction, we might possibly have avoided one of these murders and the rape. Last year, the voters of Albany County responded to my commitment to bringing a ‘Tough and Smart’ approach to law enforcement here to Albany County. There are few tools available to law enforcement that are tougher or smarter than DNA. I want to call upon my colleagues in the State Legislature to provide the resources and the authority for an expansion of the DNA database for those convicted of felonies and misdemeanors,” he said.

On the Murder charges, McGILL faces life without parole. On the Rape charge, McGILL faces up to 25 years.

The arraignment is scheduled for Friday, July 29, 2005.
