Office of the District Attorney P. David Soares Soares Cracks Down on Identity Theft ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that MICHEAL CRAFT, 38, of 137 Snyders Lake Road, Wyantskill, NY, was convicted or five counts including Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the 2 nd Degree and four misdemeanor charges after a trial before the Honorable Dan Lamont. CRAFT was found guilty of stealing checks out of mailboxes and then making them out to himself and forging the signature of the account holder. He was also found guilty of Petit Larceny, Criminal Impersonation in the 2 nd Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 5 th, and Forgery in the 3 rd degrees. DA Soares said that this case is more important than it might appear. “The damage done by identity thieves can be devastating and long lasting. Victims can spend years repairing damaged credit ratings and reputations,” he said. The People were represented by Chris Baynes of the Public Integrity Unit. CRAFT faces 3 ½ to 7 years.
