Office of the District Attorney P. David Soares William Plante Indicted for Robbing the Blind ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced the indictment of WILLIAM PLANTE, 31, of 837Whitney Drive, Schenectady, NY on Grand Larceny in the 2 nd and 3rd Degrees, Forgery, and Failure to File a Tax Return. If convicted on all counts, PLANTE faces up to 29 years in state prison. The Indictments allege that between January 1999 and April 30, 2004, PLANTE stole property worth more than $50,000 from his bookkeeping clients, located in Empire State Plaza by diverting, creating, or altering checks for his own use. PLANTE is alleged to have used his position as bookkeeper for a group of blind news vendors in Empire State Plaza to increase the dollar amount of checks made out to himself by his clients for financial services. Not only is he alleged to having increased the dollar amount of the checks themselves, but he is also accused of paying his own personal bills with checks from his client and not performing the services for which he was over billing. The dollar amount of the alleged fraud exceeds $100,000. DA Soares expressed astonishment at the crime. “Almost anything you could possibly think of to say about this crime trivializes it. When I took office in January, I promised to prosecute the wicked and protect the defenseless. This is one of those cases in which that is all too literally true,” he said.
