Dominique Devan Fields Sentenced to 14

For Shooting at an APD Officer

ALBANY , NY –  District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that DOMINIQUE DEVAN FIELDS, 19, of 226 First Street , Albany , NY was sentenced to 14 years in state prison by the Honorable Joseph C. Teresi.

FIELDS pled guilty to one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2 nd Degree on December 13, 2005 rather than face a trial on charges of attempted murder. In pleading, FIELDS admitted that on or about June 22, 2005 , in front of 291 First Street , he possessed a loaded 9mm weapon with the intent to use it unlawfully against another. At that time, FIELDS fired a gun at Officer Sean Slingerland of the Albany Police Department after having been advised by Officer Slingerland that he was a Police Officer.

DA Soares noted that the indictment took place less than a week after the arrest. “People arrested carrying weapons in Albany County can expect a swift response and a long sentence from the Street Crimes Bureau,” he said.

“Officer Slingerland woke up on the morning of June 22, 2005 , ready to serve and protect the people of Albany . During the course of his business day, he placed his life on the line for all of us by pursuing a fleeing suspect and ultimately coming face to face with the blast of a gun,” DA Soares said. “I am tired of the violence and of young, immature, irresponsible people like DOMINIQUE DEVAN FIELDS who believe firing a weapon can solve their problems.

“Mr. FIELDS has only spent 19 years on this earth. He will now spend the next 14 years in prison. This is a tragic loss for him, but unfortunately, it is a necessary blessing for the rest of us,” Soares added.
