Office of the District Attorney P. David Soares Soares Warns Public to Guard Against Auto Theft ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced the indictments of STEVEN A. GAMBINO, 35 of 458 Church Street Extension, Saratoga, NY and PEDRO MIQUEL ECHEVARRIA-DIAZ, 46, of 315 Second Avenue, Albany, NY. GAMBINO was charged with three counts including grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and reckless endangerment. The indictment alleges that GAMBINO stole a Land Rover and then drove the vehicle at an APD patrol car causing a grave risk for the occupant. The ECHEVARRIA-DIAZ indictment charges the defendant with three counts including Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and the Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, committed grand larceny by stealing a Chevrolet pick-up truck. A common factor in both cases was that the owners of the vehicles left their vehicles unlocked with the keys in the ignition. In the ECHEVARRIOA-DIAZ case, the victim actually left the vehicle running while he ran into a Stewarts to make a purchase. The lesson from these two cases is that the public should be smarter and not provide easy opportunities for car thieves. “I realize that, especially in the cold weather, it’s tempting to want to leave the motor running to keep the vehicle warm, but as we can see, that’s just asking for trouble. If we’re going to be smart on crime, we all have to be smart on crime together.” Back to Press Releases For further information contact: Richard Arthur
