UAlbany Student Steals Identity of Strangers to Obtain Fraudulent Student Loans

ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that JESSICA ERAZO, 22, of MANHATTAN, NY, was arraigned on: (6) counts of Forgery in the Second Degree, a Class “D” Felony, (3) counts of Identity Theft in the First Degree, a Class “D” Felony, (1) count of Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a Class “D” Felony, (6) counts of Attempted Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a Class “E” Felony, (1) count of Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree, a Class “E” Felony, and (1) count of Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, a Class “E” Felony, before the Honorable Dan Lamont.

The indictment alleges that between January 1, 2008 and September 1, 2009, as a student at SUNY Albany, ERAZO defrauded three victims by submitting multiple college loan applications using the victim’s names and personal information to act as co-signers. ERAZO’s total loan amount received is alleged to be greater than $19,000 with over $80,000 in unsuccessful loan applications.

ERAZO’s Grand Jury indictment was unsealed today at the arraignment.

Assistant District Attorney John Czajka of the Financial Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution of the case.
