ALBANY, NY – ALBANY, NY - District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that ALAN G. HEVESI, 66, of Forest Hills, NY has plead guilty to one (1) Count of Defrauding the Government, a Class "E" Felony before the Honorable Stephen W. Herrick.

In pleading guilty HEVESI admitted that on or about the 19th of February 2003 to July 1, 2006 at the Office of the New York State Comptroller in the City of Albany, County of Albany, State of New York he did, while being a public servant, engage in a scheme constituting a systematic ongoing course of conduct with intent to defraud the state and its resources and in doing so, he obtained property in excess of $1,000. Furthermore, he admitted that as a Public Servant he directed State Employees under his control to continuously provided transportation, aid, and other services to his wife Carol Hevesi, not a state employee, for unofficial purposes and with the intent to defraud the state.

HEVESI has agreed to pay a $5,000 fine and resign from his position as New York State Comptroller effective immediately. He also agreed to resign from his new term effective 12:01AM January 1, 2007, after having designated an interim Comptroller. HEVESI has already paid over $200,000 in restitution to the State of New York.

DA Soares stated today, "As New Yorkers, this is a sad day in our history. And as a Public Servant it saddens me that an experienced and distinguished public servant who has had a record of achievement ends up in our courtroom. We are satisfied with the sentence and feel we have made Mr. Hevesi accountable to his crime."

"The Albany County District Attorney's Office practices a single standard of justice. This means that all crimes will be prosecuted based on the evidence and the applicable law without regard to who you are and whom you know. I am here today to tell you that the system works and I commend the work of my team of investigators lead by Chief Investigator Chris D'Allesandro and Assistant District Attorney Linda Griggs of the Public Integrity Unit who handled this case," Soares said.
