William Plante Sentencted

ALBANY, NY –  District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that WILLIAM PLANTE, 31, of 837Whitney Drive, Schenectady, NY was sentenced today to 1 1/3 to 4 years and restitution of $126,000 to his victims by the Honorable Thomas A. Breslin.

The Indictments allege that between January 1999 and April 30, 2004, PLANTE stole property from his bookkeeping clients, located in Empire State Plaza by diverting, creating, or altering checks for his own use. PLANTE is alleged to have used his position as bookkeeper for a group of blind news vendors in Empire State Plaza to increase the dollar amount of checks made out to himself by his clients for financial services. Not only is he alleged to having increased the dollar amount of the checks themselves, but he is also accused of paying his own personal bills with checks from his client and not performing the services for which he was over billing. The dollar amount of the alleged fraud exceeds $100,000.

DA Soares expressed astonishment at the crime. “Almost anything you could possibly think of to say about this crime trivializes it. When I took office in January, I promised to prosecute the wicked and protect the defenseless. This is one of those cases in which that is all too literally true,” he said. “Throughout our prosecution of this case, our number one concern has been to recover the money stolen from these victims. With this plea agreement, the victims will be made whole and the perpetrator will go off to jail,” he added.
