Office of the District Attorney P. David Soares Hero Civilian Nabs Purse Snatcher PETER WILCOX Faces up to 15 Years ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares announced that PETER CHARLES WILCOX, 23 of 19 Stewart Avenue, Albany, NY has been indicted on one count of Robbery in the 2 nd Degree. If convicted, he faces a term of up to 15 years. His arraignment is scheduled for Friday, December 16, 2005. The indictment alleges that at approximately 9:51 in the morning of Saturday, October 29, 2005, in the parking lot of the Hannaford Supermarket at 900 Central Avenue, Albany, NY, WILCOX ran up to an elderly woman, grabbed her purse, knocked her down injuring her. WILCOX was apprehended as the result of an extraordinary display of civic mindedness by one of Hannaford’s contractors. This contractor was on his way to mow the lawn behind the supermarket when he witnessed a young male approach an elderly woman, steal her purse, knock her down and then run away. The contractor parked his truck and pursued WILCOX into the lot of the Armory Garage where he caught up to him and tackled him. Employees of the garage called 911 and secured WILCOX for the few moments it took for the police to arrive. DA Soares applauded the heroic action of the civilians who brought WILCOX to justice. “In a world in which it is neither desirable nor practical to have a uniformed officer on every corner, concerned citizens will always be our first line of defense. There are few things in life as honorable as standing up for and protecting our seniors and I have the greatest respect for the concerned citizens whose selfless courage resulted in the arrest of PETER WILCOX,” he said.
