Office of the District Attorney P. David Soares ANTHONY SAPIENZA Sentenced to 14 For Robbery ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares announced that ANOTHONY S. SAPIENZA, 35, of 1907 Central Avenue Albany, NY was sentenced to 14 years in state prison and five years of post release supervision today by the Honorable Thomas A. Breslin. SAPIENZA had pled guilty to one count of Attempted Robbery in the 1 st Degree on October 14, 2005. The indictment alleged that SAPIENZA broke into a motel on Central Avenue at approximately 1:45 in the morning of August 23, 2005, viciously beat the night manager over the head with a blunt instrument causing multiple lacerations to his scalp and stealing approximately $650 in cash. SAPIENZA was arrested less than 15 minutes later following the heroic effort of the victim to place a 911 call and some quick thinking on the part of Investigators and Officers of the Colonie Police Force. When the 911 call came in, Colonie PD launched a standard response plan which lead them to determine that there was a likelihood that SAPIENZA was in the Price Chopper across from the motel. They dispatched a car to the Price Chopper and as the car approached, Officers spotted the suspect making a quick U-turn to re-enter the store. They called back-up. They also spoke to company employees and determined that SAPIENZA was the only customer in the store at that time. SAPIENZA fled to the back of the store where he was spotted by a store employee who made an announcement on the store’s public address system alerting the Police to the suspect’s location in a stock room. When the Officers approached, they found SAPIENZA with bloody hands and bloody clothes. They also found $650 in blood-stained cash in a trash can. DA Soares thanked the Colonie PD for their efficient and aggressive investigation. “Given the quality of the forensic evidence collected by the Colonie PD, SAPIENZA had little choice but to plead guilty. Here’s a case where careful planning produced the fast thinking and fast acting that resulted in the suspect being caught literally red-handed,” Soares said.
