David Soares McDermott Staying on Will Smooth Transition Albany, NY - Albany County District Attorney-elect David Soares will announce that Mike McDermott, the current Chief Assistant District Attorney, will retain his position during the Soares administration Soares said that this appointment would enable him to honor his pledge to be both "tough on crime and smart on crime". By retaining McDermott as Chief Assistant DA, Soares said he plans to maintain the Office's reputation for tough and vigorous criminal prosecution as well as to ease the transition into the new administration. Mike McDermott, who earlier in the month won the 2004 Arson Prosecutor of the Year Award in recognition of his work in closing high-profile arson cases, has a top reputation as a tough criminal prosecutor. During his career as a prosecutor, McDermott has handled over thirty homicide cases and presented hundreds of cases to Supreme and County Court Grand Juries. He has lectured to other lawyers on criminal law and trial techniques at seminars sponsored by the New York Prosecutor's Training Institute and has also been an invited lecturer and local chair of numerous seminars hosted by the New York State Bar Association McDermott graduated from Albany Law School in 1989 and Siena College in 1983 has been the Chief Assistant Prosecutor since 2002. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Siena College. McDermott joined the Albany County District Attorney’s office upon graduation from Albany Law School in 1989. After three years as an Assistant District Attorney in Albany, he became the Chief Assistant to DA for Rensselaer County in 1992. He returned to the Albany DA’s office in 1993 where he stayed for two years prior to joining the Albany Law firm of Bouck, Holloway, Kiernan, and Casey where he stayed for seven years.
