Office of the District Attorney P. David Soares Statement of Distict Attorney P. David Soares on the Westervelt Verdict ALBANY , NY – This office has just accepted the jury’s guilty verdict in the trial of Eric Westervelt. As you know, we also are engaged in a trial of Paul Colbert and last week we indicted Jason Kutey. While we are pleased with the result of the Westerveldt trial and hope that this result brings some sense of closure to the family of the victim, we would much prefer not to have these cases at all. All three of these cases involve violent breakups of intimate relationships. As we can see, in a world where violence is increasingly seen as a viable option, the emotional stress of the end of an intimate relationship is increasingly resulting in violence. I would like the public to take these cases as a warning that individuals, especially women (but not always women) should take advantage of all the protections that society and the law allow to protect themselves when they are attempting to end a difficult relationship and especially when they are trying to end a stormy relationship. Additionally I would like to thank the Bethlehem Police Force for the aggressive way they investigated this case and supported the prosecution through to its conclusion.
