Office of the District Attorney P. David Soares KIM KIRKLAND SENTENCED TO 8 YEARS ON DRUGS AND WEAPONS CHARGES ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares announced that KIM KIRKLAND, 24, OF 587 Second Street, Albany, NY was sentenced today to a term of 8 years in State Prison by the Honorable Joseph C. Teresi. KIRKLAND had pled guilty on June 2, 2005 to charges of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon KIRKLAND was brought to justice by a targeted investigation by the Community Response Unit of the Albany Police Department. First, they performed a number of “controlled buys”. Then they obtained a search warrant for KIRKLAND’s house and his car. Police arrested KIRKLAND on April 20, 2005 and they took his car to the Detective Office Garage. There they conducted a search of the car using a canine partner. The canine partner responded positively to a location on the passenger side of the front dash board where the side passenger air bag is normally located. Further investigation indicated that the side air vent was blocked and that there were aftermarket wires leading from the fuses for the trunk open mechanism and the cigarette lighter. These wires lead to a secret trap in the car which was found to contain approximately 53 grams (more than four ounces) of crack cocaine and a 9mm beretta pistol loaded with 15 live rounds. A subsequent search of KIRKLAND’s house, also using the canine partner, resulted in the discovery of an additional 9.2 ounces of CRACK COCAINE hidden in the false back of a television. DA Soares praised the quality of the police work in this case. "Kim Kirkland is a well known crack dealer. It will be nice to have him off the streets", he said.
