District Attorney Soares Announces First Annual Community Accountability Board Retreat

ALBANY , NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that the Office of the Albany County District Attorney will host the first Community Prosecution Community Accountability Board (CAB) retreat on Saturday, April 12, 2008.

The CAB is a community based alternative sentencing program for non-violent offenders of quality of life crimes. In CAB proceedings offenders report to a group of local community leaders to discuss the harm caused by their actions. The ‘contract’ created by the offender and the CAB is binding in court and allows the offender the opportunity to engage in community service, job training, education programs, counseling and other meaningful activities to better the community rather than entering the criminal justice system through probation or incarceration.

It is estimated that in addition to reducing recidivism and improving community relations, the CAB saves the County of Albany over $120,000 annually by reducing the burden on court calendars and providing much needed community service.

WHO :  District Attorney Soares, approximately 40 CAB and members,   and several speakers including members of the District Attorney’s Office and Lorenzo Jones, the Executive Director of A Better Way Foundation

WHAT:   CAB members will learn new tactics to improve board performance as well as renew their ongoing commitment to fighting crime in our community

WHERE Carondelet Hospitality Center , 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham
