Office of the District Attorney P. David Soares Drug Dealer Convicted of Selling $100 of Crack Cocaine, ALBANY , NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that JABEL JONES, 24, of 354 Second Street, Albany, NY, was sentenced to nine years in prison by the Honorable Thomas Breslin. JONES was found guilty after a trial by jury of (1) count of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the 3 rd Degree on April 11, 2007. On October 3, 2006 at approximately 5:54 p.m. in front of 354 Second Street, in the City of Albany, JONES knowingly and unlawfully sold a quantity of crack cocaine to another person. Utilizing a confidential informant, APD purchased $100.00 worth of crack cocaine from JONES. The buy was wired, video taped and observed by law enforcement officers. As part of the standard judicial process, the prosecution offered JONES a plea bargain that involved a sentence of three years in prison with two years of post release supervision. The plea offered to JONES is customary for the crime of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the 3 rd Degree, while sentences of up to 12 years can be imposed. JONES declined the plea offer for the opportunity to take his case to trial. As in all cases, when a defendant declines a plea offer, they assume the risk of facing the maximum penalty as allowed for under the law. “ The drug dealers in the City of Albany have severely diminished the quality of life for all citizens living here,” commented DA Soares. “We must remember that despite the urban decay people see as they drive through our city, each block is home to incredible individuals and families who are worth fighting for.
