Dashawn Carter Gets 25 to Life

ALBANY, NY –  District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that DASHAWN CARTER, 27, of 122 St. Marks Place, Brooklyn, NY. CARTER was sentenced to 25 years to life for Murder in the 2 nd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2 nd Degree by the Honorable Dan Lamont. CARTER had been convicted at trial on February 18, 2005.

CARTER was found guilty of having shown depraved indifference when he fired eight shots from a 9mm handgun hitting Courtney Young three times and killing him. The victim was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center approximately one hour after the shooting. Although the defendant claimed to have no recollection of the incident, the jury accepted the prosecutor’s contention that after having words with the victim in the Twilight Lounge, CARTER waited outside the bar and ambushed the victim shortly after closing time.

Based on the identification of the perpetrator provided by eyewitnesses, the defendant was located by the Albany Police Department within three hours at the Greyhound Bus Terminal. Later on the day after the murder, the 9mm handgun was found by a concerned citizen and turned into the Albany Police at South Station.

DA Soares said that he hopes that the sentence will bring some measure of solace to the family of the victim. “Courtney Young was adored by a large and loving family. He will be missed forever,” he said. “I can only hope that this verdict and this sentence helps in what is surely going to be a very long and very painful healing process,” he added.
