 “Grandparent” Scammer Sentenced 


ALBANY, NY -  District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that KELVIN PICHARDO, 24, of Bronx, NY, was sentenced in Albany County Court today for his role in a local “Grandparent Scam.”

The Honorable Andra Ackerman sentenced PICHARDO to (6) months in the Albany County Correctional Facility, to be followed by (5) years of Felony Probation. PICHARDO previously pleaded guilty to (1) Count of Attempted Grand Larceny in the Third Degree as a Hate Crime, a Class D Felony.

On September 19, 2019, while at a location on Sand Creek Road in the Town of Colonie, PICHARDO stole currency in excess of $3,000 from a person over the age of 60, and attempted to do the same on September 25, 2019 at a residence on Broderick Street Town of Colonie. PICHARDO targeted the victims due to their age and gained access to their funds by pretending to be a grandchild in need of financial assistance.

Executive Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Mastaitis of the Financial Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution of this case.
