Criminal Investigator - DV

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is investigative work involving the application of the appropriate methods and procedures in the investigation of alleged criminal complaints and verification of evidence to present in criminal proceedings in cases involving sexual abuse, rape, domestic violence, child abuse, battering, and domestic abuse. Work is performed under general supervision of an attorney or Chief Criminal Investigator. Investigations involve dealing with highly confidential and legally privileged information. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Investigates criminal complaints to establish and verify the authenticity of complaints;
  • Conducts interviews with witnesses and police officers to compile, verify and develop information to be used as evidence;
  • Trains local law enforcement officers in the techniques and methods of preserving evidence in cases of domestic abuse, child abuse, sexual abuse and rape,
  • Secures evidence in the form of statements, documents, and records;
  • Serves subpoenas on witnesses and records, if necessary, assures that witnesses and records are produced in court;
  • Prepares reports on investigations and complaints and keeps record of information obtained;
  • Maintains a tight office security at all times;
  • May be called upon to give testimony in court.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of principles, practices and methods used in investigative work;
Thorough knowledge of Criminal Procedural Law as it pertains to investigator position;
Thorough knowledge of sex offender registry requirements,
Thorough knowledge of the range of support services and temporary housing resources available to victims of crimes of domestic violence, domestic abuse, rape, battery, and child abuse,
Skill in obtaining information through interviews and observations;
Skill in obtaining information from unwilling sources;
Ability to deal firmly but courteously with the public;
Ability to communicate effectively with rape victims, victims of sexual or domestic abuse and child abuse,
Ability to prepare written reports;
Integrity;
Tact;
Good physical condition.

MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS: Either:

  • Graduation from a NYS or regionally accredited two year college with an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice and five (5) years of experience in the field of in cases of rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence, domestic abuse, and child abuse, or
  • Graduation from High School or possession of a GED and eight (8) years as a police investigator or as a sworn law enforcement officer, which would include experience in managing highly confidential investigations and experience in dealing with police agencies in cases of rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence, domestic abuse, and child abuse, or
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated above.

Jur.Cl.: Two (2) exempt in the District Attorney’s Office. One (1) exempt in the Public Defender’s Office. Otherwise competitive.
