ALBANY, NY - District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that several members of local law enforcement were recognized for solving a string of serial burglaries at the South Mall Towers apartment complex. Members of the Albany Police Department and Albany County District Attorney’s Office were acknowledged for their work on the case today at a ceremony at the apartment complex in Albany.
On separate dates in November and December 2015, MARIA SANCHEZ, 42, of Albany unlawfully entered the apartments at South Mall Towers at 101 South Pearl Street in the City of Albany and stole items from the apartments of several senior residents. During the commission of all of these burglaries SANCHEZ intentionally damaged electronic lock keypads in order to gain access to the apartments. Among other items, SANCHEZ stole a flat screen TV, coin collections, and a computer monitor.
On April 21, 2016 SANCHEZ was sentenced to 9 years in State Prison before the Honorable Andrew G. Ceresia in Albany County Supreme Court, after previously pleading guilty to (1) Count of Burglary in the Second Degree, a Class C Violent Felony. SANCHEZ was also ordered to pay restitution to the victims for the items that were not recovered.
Assistant District Attorney Matthew Hauf of the Major Crimes Unit prosecuted this case and was awarded for his swift prosecution of SANCHEZ. Members of the Albany Police Department were also recognized for their investigation of the case and apprehension of the suspect, including: Detective (Ret.) William VanAmburgh, Detective Louis Aiossa, Detective Daniel Seeber, Detective Christopher Cornell, Detective Dennis Simmons, Detective William DiCarlo, Detective Anthony DiGuisseppe, Officer Rayshawn Hoke, Officer Kristen Pulcher, Officer Nicholas Carpenter, Detective Commander Edward Donohue, Officer Michael Delano, Officer Leonard Gaspary, and Officer Jan Mika.
