DSS- Employment Unit

Operates Welfare to Work program, which cooperates with TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, a Federal Program) and similar programs to help promote self-sufficiency. Utilizes a variety of job training programs, educational services, and an employment staff to aid individuals in finding suitable employment. Also provides them all necessary support services they may need to participate in these activities to include but not limited to transportation and child care subsidy funding

Homeless Support

 

HATAS: Homeless and Traveler’s Aid Society

Description: “HATAS is the Albany County gateway to public emergency shelter. Every homeless individual and family seeking public shelter comes through our front door. We help more than homeless people. Hundreds of other low-income people and people with disabilities come to us each year for advocacy, counseling, case management, and other assistance. We have an emergency hotline that operates 24-7, every day of the year. We can help people in crisis before they lose their homes”

Housing and Code Information

 

Albany Tenant’s Council (United Tenants of Albany)

Mission Statement: The mission of UTA is to protect tenants rights for safe, decent and affordable housing, with special emphases on those who have the greatest need or who experience the most severe problems and to promote the development and preservation of more affordable housing

Services offered include a drop-in center to provide crisis intervention and counseling, a telephone hotline, tenant/landlord mediation, court advocacy, and coordination of homeless prevention services with other organizations.

City Code Enforcement

The Department of General Services has the responsibility to enforce several sections of the municipal code of the City of Albany. Among these are codes relating to refuse collection, illegal dumping, anti-litter, snow removal, streets and encroachments. Many of the outdoor “Quality of Life” issues are also handled by DGS.

Services offered include a waste collection and recycling program, regulation of lawn and garden aesthetics, ensuring proper snow removal, and fining of code violators.

Prisoners Legal Services

Mission Statement: “Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York (PLS) is a non-profit legal services organization providing civil legal services to indigent inmates in New York State correctional facilities in cases where no other counsel is available. Since its creation by the New York State Bar Association in 1976, PLS' mission has been to provide high quality, effective legal representation and assistance to indigent prisoners, to help them to secure their civil and human rights and advocate for more humane prisons and for a more humane criminal justice system.”

ROOTS: Re-entry Opportunities and Orientations Towards Success

SPARC: St Peter’s Addiction Recovery Center

Offers Inpatient Detoxification and Rehabilitation, as well as several satellite locations for outpatient care. SPARC accepts major health insurances and Medicaid.
