TASHAWN TARVER

16 Year Old Pleads Guilty to Gun Possession

ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that TASHAWN TARVER, 16, of Albany, NY, pled guilty to (1) count of Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class “D” Felony in front of the Honorable Thomas A. Breslin. Under the terms of the plea bargain, TARVER faces a maximum of 3 years in prison and 2 years post release supervision when sentenced on October 31, 2008.

On August 10, 2008, at 11:34 in the area of Elk and Lark Streets, Albany Police Officers on routine patrol observed TARVER riding up and down the street between a lot of foot traffic. The officers asked to speak with TARVER, at which point he immediately took off on his bike. While in pursuit, officers observed TARVER discard an item. Upon apprehending TARVER, officers went back to the location where TARVER discarded the item and recovered a loaded .25 caliber handgun.

“Our community has had ENOUGH of the guns, ENOUGH of the bloodshed and ENOUGH of the fear. I am very glad this weapon and the individual willing to use that weapon are no longer on our streets and I urge every citizen to call the ENOUGH hotline if you know someone carrying an illegal weapon. Please do the right thing for our children and our community, you will earn $500 and save lives. Unfortunately at a time when this young man should be thinking about heading back to high school and going to the prom, he will be heading to prison instead.”

Street Crimes Bureau Chief Francisco Calderon handled the prosecution of this case.

If you have information about an illegal handgun in Albany County, please call the ENOUGH Hotline at 765-3668.
