McKnight Sentenced to 30 Years for Attempted Murder

ALBANY , NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that PETER MCKNIGHT, 46, of Colorado , was sentenced to 30 years in prison and 5 years post release supervision for the attempted murder of two victims and a period of one to three years in prison for attempted escape by the Honorable Stephen Herrick. In July, MCKNIGHT pled guilty to (2) counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and (1) count of Attempted Escape in the First Degree.

On April 27, 2007 at about 1:37 a.m. on Deerfield Drive in the City of Cohoes , County of Albany , PETER MCKNIGHT, possessing a loaded weapon, broke into and entered the dwelling of his estranged wife by smashing out a sliding glass door. MCKNIGHT attempted to cause serious injury and death to two victims inside the home by shooting one victim in the arm and the other in the back and spine. After fleeing from the scene, MCKNIGHT lead police on a manhunt and was caught in Saratoga County on the evening of April 28, 2007 . On June 28, 2007 MCKNIGHT attempted to flee from the Albany County Jail by gaining access to the roof of the Correctional Facility but was immediately apprehended during the escape attempt.

“I would like to thank the members of the Cohoes Police Department and the New York State Police for their diligence and commitment to investigating and prosecuting this horrific crime. This criminal packed a costume, was derailed by weather on his first attempt to travel from Colorado to Albany , and then two months later actually carried out this premeditated murder plot to kill members of his family. This man will spend the next several decades locked away to think about his actions and the person who helped him transport the weapon used in the crime will now face criminal charges in Albany County,” commented DA Soares. “I sincerely hope the events of today help to bring about some closure for the victims, their friends and family.”
