Office of the District Attorney P. David Soares Edwin Tirado Found Guilty of Manslaughter ALBANY , NY – Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that EDWIN TIRADO, JR, 36, of Schenectady, NY, was found guilty after trial by jury of (1) count of Manslaughter in the Second Degree, a Class “C” Felony, in front of the Honorable Dan Lamont. TIRADO faces up to 5 to 15 years in prison. On February 15 th, 2007 beginning at 7:00 P.M. near 98 Wolf Road in the Town of Colonie and through the City of Schenectady and ending at the Oswald D. Heck Developmental Center at 500 Balltown Road at approximately 9:00 P.M., TIRADO did recklessly cause the death of Jonathan Carey by inappropriately restraining the victim and physically compressing the victim’s body with his own body, causing the victim to stop breathing, and, having a legal duty to do so, failing to render aid or to provide, secure, or summon medical attention. “I am very grateful to the jury for their service during this very difficult and emotional trial,” commented DA Soares. “When a young person dies unexpectedly, there is little that can bring comfort to their friends and family. But when a wonderful and vibrant young man passes away unnecessarily, at the hands of those who are responsible for his protection, I cannot even begin to imagine the range of emotions that are experienced by his loved ones. There is no punishment sufficient enough for the negligence of this man, but it is my hope that this verdict and the conclusion of this trial will help bring about the healing process for the friends and family of Jonathan Carey.” Sentencing for TIRADO is scheduled for December 14, 2007. Homicide and Special Victims Bureau Chief David Rossi handled the prosecution of this case. # # # For further information contact: Heather Streeter Orth
