Gun Possession Plea Results in 3 Years Sentence for Albany Man

ALBANY , NY – Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that KADEEM YOUNG, 19, of Albany, NY pled guilty to (1) count of Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2 nd Degree in front of the Honorable Stephen Herrick. YOUNG faces three years in prison.

On April 26, 2007 at 12:13 P.M. in the area of 67 Henry Johnson Boulevard, an Albany County Sheriff on routine patrol observed KADEEM YOUNG running with an item under his shirt that looked like a firearm. Upon seeing the police, YOUNG continued running and was observed throwing a shotgun type of weapon onto a roof. YOUNG was detained and police recovered a loaded sawed off .16 gauge shotgun. The barrel was four inches long.

“This case is a prime example of the arms race within our neighborhoods and the severity with which I intend to fight this build up of dangerous, illegal weapons,” commented DA Soares. “This young man was prosecuted under a program called ‘Operation Speeding Bullet’, which expedites gun related cases so these criminals are not offered bail, do not return to our streets and are prosecuted in County Court rather than City Court. With all of the recent shootings, I hope the three year sentence received by Mr. Young sends a message to all the young men carrying guns on our streets right now, that just possessing that weapon can land them in prison for a long time.”

Sentencing for YOUNG is scheduled for July 17, 2007.

ADA Francisco Calderon of the Street Crimes Unit handled the prosecution of this case.
