Man Pleads Guilty to Killing Pet Cat

ALBANY , NY – Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that WILLIAM BRANNIGAN, 61, of Slingerlands, NY plead guilty to (1) count of Attempted Aggravated Cruelty to Animals in front of the Honorable John Bailey. In the terms of the plea bargain, BRANNIGAN served 60 days in jail and will serve three years probation. He must forfeit all animals currently in the household, he is not allowed to own any animals while on probation, animal control will be allowed to spot check his residence to ensure no animals are in the house and BRANNIGAN must pay restitution of $131.52 to the veterinarian who performed the autopsy.

“It is an outrage that an innocent animal was forced to endure a terrible attack with no ability to defend itself against an adult man who should have known better,” commented DA Soares. “I am very pleased that this man served significant time in jail for his crime and more importantly, his sentence ensures he will be closely monitored and will no longer have the ability to victimize another animal.”

On March 23, 2007, BRANNIGAN stabbed his18 year old cat, Elvis, four times with a pocket knife because he incorrectly believed that the cat was dead. BRANNIGAN then placed the cat in a bag behind the house and buried it in snow.  Elvis was later retrieved and an autopsy revealed that he was alive when he was stabbed.

Sentencing for BRANNIGAN is scheduled for July 19, 2007.

ADA Molly Magguilli handled the prosecution of this case.
