Albany Robber Sentenced to 8 years in State Prison

ALBANY , NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced the sentencing of FIDELIS ONYIA, 19, of Albany, NY. ONYIA was sentenced to 8 years in prison and 2½ years of post-release supervision for (1) count of Robbery in the 1 st Degree, (1) count of Burglary in the 1 st Degree, and (1) count of Robbery in the 2 nd Degree before the Honorable Dan Lamont.

FIDELIS ONYIA, along with SHAVAR FOOTMAN, 21, of 276 Ontario Street, Albany, NY, forced their way into a home at 547 Hamilton Street on April 6 th, 2006. The defendants stole a large amount of cash from the victim at gunpoint before the victim was able to escape from the home and alert police who were on routine patrol in the area. A standoff occurred between the police officers and the defendants who eventually fled the home on foot. ONYIA was apprehended at the corner of Hudson Avenue and Ontario Street.

“When a citizen of Albany County has their security or possessions stolen within the confines of their own home, action will be taken,” commented DA Soares. “This case should be a reminder to everyone that theft of others’ property will not be tolerated and the law will take appropriate measure to ensure justice is carried out.”
