McKinney Sentenced to 18 Years For Manslaughter

Albany , N.Y.— District Attorney P. David Soares today announced that MANNY MCKINNEY, 31 of Fayetteville, NC, was sentenced to 18 years in state prison and 5 years post release supervision before the Honorable Dan Lamont. MCKINNEY plead guilty to one count of Manslaughter in the 1 st degree, a class “B” felony.

In early October 2005, MCKINNEY caused the death of Albany resident Joeseph Murphy, 67. MCKINNEY confessed to hitting Murphy in the head with the intent to cause serious physical injury, which ultimately lead to his death. Following his death, officials were unable to locate the victim and due to the complexities of the case, it would have been very difficult to prosecute without the remains of Joseph Murphy. In accordance with the plea agreement, MCKINNEY agreed to lead police to the location of Joseph Murphy’s body after disclosing that he had dismembered and buried Joseph Murphy’s remains in the Crossgates Mall area.

“While no sentence can make up for the loss of a loved one and valued community member, it is my hope that today’s events allow for a bit of closure and begin to bring about the healing process for Mr. Murphy’s friends and family,” commented DA Soares. “Mr. Murphy is now at rest, and our community can rest easier knowing the man who took his life will spend the best years of his life in prison for his unnecessary and disturbing acts.”

David Rossi, Homicide and Special Victims Bureau Chief, handled the prosecution of this case.
