Reid Receives 25 to Life in Prison for Murder

ALBANY , NY –  District Attorney P. David Soares announced that LAMAR REID, 26, of Albany , NY was sentenced to 25 years to life by the Honorable Thomas Breslin. REID was found guilty of Murder in the 2nd Degree after a trial presided over by the Honorable Thomas Breslin on March 30, 2007 .

“I am very pleased that this murderer will spend at least the next quarter century of his life behind bars. Nothing can make up for the loss of a love one, but it is my hope that this sentence will bring some closure to the family of Shawndell Smith who has diligently pursued justice for their son for the last six years,” commented DA Soares. “We will now focus our efforts on sending the other man charged with this senseless murder to prison.”

On June 8 th, 2001, LAMAR REID and SHAHKENE JOSEPH, 23, knowingly shot and killed Shawndell Smith, 21, at 298 Second Street. The two defendants, who were both armed, repeatedly shot Smith with a 20 gauge shotgun and a 7.62 caliber semi automatic rifle through a wooden door when they knew Smith was behind the door. Smith was hit in the neck with a bullet from the automatic rifle and was hit in the shoulder and arm with shot from the shotgun. Shawndell Smith subsequently died from the injuries caused by the REID and JOSEPH.

JOSEPH will be tried for the murder of Shawndell Smith in front of the Honorable Thomas Breslin.

ADA Dave Rossi from the Homicide Unit handled the prosecution of this case.
