Compliance Inspection Finds Several Underage Drinkers in Local Bars Just One Week after Deadly DWI Accident

ALBANY , NY – District Attorney P. David Soares today announced the results of compliance inspections conducted in two Albany bars last night by the Office of the Albany County District Attorney, the State Liquor Authority and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Beginning at 11:30 PM last evening, two teams of law enforcement officials conducted inspections of Sadie Klutz and the Stone Crow. The compliance inspections found that in the wake of last week’s deadly car accident involving underage drinking and driving, bars are still struggling with the problem of underage patrons. The inspections resulted in the arrest of five underage drinkers and two bartenders in the Stone Crow and one underage drinker in Sadie Klutz.

“The consumption of alcohol continues to play a role in many of the most avoidable and preventable cases presented to this office from assaults to muggings to DWI. We don’t need to look to far back in recent history for tragic examples of the results of combining underage drinking and operating a motor vehicle. We have a tremendous responsibility to ensure that those who are consuming alcohol are doing so lawfully and responsibly and those serving alcohol also share the same responsibility to serve alcohol lawfully and responsibly,” commented DA Soares.

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner David J. Swarts stated, "I am pleased to support the activities of local law enforcement in their efforts to combat underage drinking and enhance highway safety. The DMV has been leading a statewide "Operation Prevent" program specifically designed to assist law enforcement with detecting counterfeit and altered identification used by minors to purchase alcoholic beverages. This award winning program couples highly trained Investigators from DMV with local authorities to identify fake IDs being used by minors in establishments serving alcohol."

The Office of the Albany County District Attorney will continue to conduct compliance inspections with our partners in law enforcement to ensure that keeping underage drinkers out of the bars remains a priority throughout Albany County.
