About Drug Court

The mission of drug courts is to stop the abuse of alcohol and other drugs and related criminal activity. Drug courts offer a compelling choice for individuals whose criminal justice involvement stems from drug use: participation in treatment. In exchange for successful completion of the treatment program, the court may reduce the original charge, reduce or set aside a sentence, offer some lesser penalty, or offer a combination of the three.

Through the dedication of Judge Herrick and the Drug Court team, more than 221 people have successfully graduated from the Albany County Drug Court since it was created in 2002. The average participant graduates after 19 months, but programs can range from 17 to 41 months based on each individual case. There are approximately 180 participants currently enrolled in the Drug Court program.
