Witness Intimidator Sentenced to 30 Years

ALBANY , NY – Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that IJAL SUDLER, 27, of Brooklyn, NY, was sentenced this morning to 30 years in prison and three years post release supervision by the Honorable Stephen Herrick.

SUDLER faced between 6 to 30 years in prison. In giving him to the maximum sentence possible, Judge Herrick cited his complete disregard for the judicial system, including efforts to manipulate witnesses into perjuring themselves on his behalf.

“Protecting witnesses is one of the most important acts this office undertakes, and this sentence should serve as lesson to anyone thinking of engaging in similar behavior,” commented DA Soares. “This is a dangerous man who, in attempting to threaten and coerce witnesses, cost the county thousand of dollars to protect and relocate people who feared for their safety. I am very pleased that this man will now spend the next three decades in prison thinking about the impact his irresponsible and malicious actions have had on the justice system, and most importantly the witnesses in this case.”

On February 7, 2008, SUDLER was arraigned on a bench warrant arising out of his failure to appear for trial on October 15 th, 2007. The US Marshals apprehended SUDLER outside of Richmond Virginia last month.

On Friday, October 19, 2007, SUDLER was found guilty after trial by jury of (3) counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a Class “B” Felony, (1) count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fourth Degree, a Class “C” Felony and (1) count of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the Second Degree, a Class “A” Misdemeanor in front of the Honorable Stephen W. Herrick.

SUDLER was out on $20,000 bail, but failed to show up to his original trial date on September 10, 2007. Over a month later, the trial proceeded without SUDLER and he was subsequently found guilty.

On November 3, 2006 at approximately 4:48 P.M. in the area of 164 Sherman Street in the City of Albany, SUDLER did knowingly and unlawfully posses one-half ounce or more of a narcotic drug, cocaine, with intent to sell it. Additionally, SUDLER knowingly possessed materials suitable for the packaging of narcotic drugs, consisting of plastic baggies with intent to use the same for the purposes of unlawfully manufacturing, packaging and dispensing of any narcotic drug or stimulant.

Eric Galarneau of the Street Crimes Bureau handled the prosecution of this case.
